Christian Legal Society Applauds Nomination Of Judge John G. Roberts Jr. To Be The 109th Justice Of The U.S. Supreme Court

WASHINGTON, D.C., July 20, 2005 - The Christian Legal Society, the nation’s oldest and largest membership association of Christian lawyers and law students, today applauds President Bush for nominating Judge John G. Roberts, Jr. to the U.S. Supreme Court and calls on the Senate to expeditiously complete hearings before the Judiciary Committee and then fairly provide an up or down vote on Judge Robert’s nomination without unreasonable delay or filibuster.

“John Roberts is well-known and respected as a ‘lawyer’s lawyer.’ He is considered by many who practice before the Supreme Court to be one of the finest appellate advocates in the country,” said CLS’ Executive Director Samuel B. Casey. “President Bush fulfilled his campaign promise to nominate an extremely qualified person with the requisite outstanding legal education and intellect, judicial temperament, superior appellate advocacy experience, and, last but not least, an outstanding working knowledge of the Constitution as it is written and was intended to be interpreted.”

“We are particularly pleased that Judge Roberts, by virtue of his public service and private practice, has an excellent working knowledge of the provisions of our Constitution that protect our first and most vital liberties of free speech, association and religious free exercise,” said CLS’ Center for Law & Religious Freedom Director Gregory S. Baylor. “We are also pleased the President nominated someone who, by virtue of his appellate experience, promises upon his confirmation to make an immediate, positive and long-term impact on the respect the Supreme Court needs to preserve our constitutional form of government.”

Roberts received bi-partisan support from the legal community and the unanimous approval of the Senate leading to his appointment on the Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit. Previously, Roberts was considered to be one of the finest appellate lawyers in the nation, arguing 39 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court.

He graduated with honors from Harvard undergraduate and law schools and clerked for Second Circuit Judge Henry Friendly and Associate Justice William Rehnquist of the U.S. Supreme Court. He served as Associate White House Counsel to President Reagan (1981-86) and as Principal Deputy Solicitor General (1989-93). In addition to his public service, he has practiced law as the Appellate Group leader at one of our nation’s most respected law firms Hogan & Hartson (1986-1989 and 1993-2003).

Judge Roberts, 50, is married to Jane and they have two children. They are members of the Roman Catholic Church.
