Ministry Produces, Delivers Food Worldwide
A/G News, July 27, 2010 - Last year, Gleanings for the Hungry - a mercy ministry of Youth With
a Mission in Dinuba, California - produced more
than 4 million pounds of food that was then shipped
to 30 nations by partnering churches and missions agencies,
such as Convoy of Hope.
"Convoy of Hope has a driving passion to feed
the world," says Jeff Nene, senior director of
Media and Communications for Convoy of Hope. "Gleanings
has been very instrumental in helping us accomplish
our mission, and together we have been able to share
the gospel through feeding programs."
The partnership, which involves Convoy of Hope transporting
donated goods to Gleanings, and Gleanings donating
the final product to Convoy of Hope for distribution,
helps both agencies achieve a common goal: to feed
the hungry both spiritually and physically.
"We're using food as a tool for sharing the gospel
of Jesus throughout the world," says Rick O'Dwyer,
director of Gleanings for the Hungry.
Founders Wally and Norma Wenge began Gleanings in 1982
with hopes of using a sun-dehydrating process to preserve
locally grown peaches and nectarines that otherwise
were going to waste. In 2009, with the help of hundreds
of volunteers, the organization produced 600,000 pounds
of dried fruit, O'Dwyer says.
Gleanings also blends donated products with a soup
base flavoring to produce soup mixes. From January
to May of 2009, this resulted in more than 27 million
8-ounce servings of soup.
