Perhaps a few EXAMPLES will be helpful:

If the first word or phrase is [Billy Graham]

and the next conjunction is AND,

and the second word or phrase is [New York],

and all the other blanks are left unfilled,

this selection criteria will find ALL and ONLY news items that contain BOTH “Billy Graham”

and “New York” in their text. **

If the first word or phrase is [Billy Graham]

and the next conjunction is AND NOT,

and the second word or phrase is [New York],

and all the other blanks are left unfilled,

this selection criteria will find ALL news items that contain “Billy Graham” in their text,

but NOT those that also have “New York” (or a variation* of that) in their text. **

If the first word or phrase is [Billy Graham]

and the next conjunction is OR,

and the next word or phrase is [Luis Palau]

and the next conjunction is AND,

and the next word or phrase is [New York],

and all the other blanks are left unfilled,

this selection criteria will find all news items that contain both “Luis Palau” and “New York”,

and also ALL releases that contain “Billy Graham”. **

* You may enter a word or a phrase of two or more words in each of the first four blanks.

Unfilled blanks are ignored (along with their preceding conjunction, if there is one).

Do not use quote marks in or around words or phrases!

** Actually, more may be found that differ only in phrase word spacing or capitalization.

Be sure the conjunction you want is selected between blanks filled with entries.

A single entry or an ANDed group of entries comprise a search criteria to find all news
items that contain
all of those entries.
The OR conjunction allows you to specify more than one such criteria in the same search.
“AND NOT” negates
only the word or phrase that immediately follows, but you may use
more
than one “AND NOT” in the
same criteria!

More Examples:

If you select an “On or Before”publication date

and all other blanks are left unfilled,

this selection criteria will find all news items that were published on or before that date.

If you select an “On or After” publication date

and all other blanks are left unfilled,

this selection criteria will find all news items that were published on or after that date.

If you select an “On or After” publication date

and you also select an “On or Before” publication date

and all other blanks are left unfilled,

this selection criteria will find all news items that were published between these two dates.

If you make any of the preceding three searches, but also have some information in one or more
of the other blanks, this selection criteria will cause search to check the date criteria first, and
if that is satisfied for a given news item, it will also test the remaining critera on that
news item.

If you select an “Issuing Organization",

and all other blanks are left unfilled,

this selection criteria will find all news items issued by that organization.

If you select an “Issuing Organization”,

and you also select a publication date range,

and you also specify values for any of blanks 1 through 4,

this selection criteria will find all news items from that organization,

that are in the specified date range,

that also satisfy the criteria expressed in blanks 1 through 4.
